- Most information comes from 1900 census, which shows 5 children, 3 living. I have no names for the dead children. Certificate of Baptism is dated 01/12/1879. Suffolk County News Obit says Ada and Nelson had 6 children. Information also comes from Birth Certificate of son Harold, 1870, 1880 Census and father's Obit. It is rumored that Nelson was despondent over his wife's death in 1926 and committed suicide around 1932.
1890-1891 Directory for Bridgeport, CT - Nelson Sweezey is listed both years as a Ship Carpenter.
1900 Census - Living on Candee Ave in Sayville, Suffolk Co., NY (38) with his wife Ada M. (34) and children: Vernon (15), Harold N. (10), and Leonard (9). Census says that Ada had 5 children, with 3 still living. This is first marriage for both, and they have been married 18 years. He is a "Boatman". Everyone born in NY. Listed as "Nelson Sweezey".
1910 Census - Living in Sayville, Islip Town, Suffolk Co., NY with wife Ada M. (44) and children: Vernon C. (25), Harold N. (20) and Leland F. (18). This is the first marriage for Nelson and Ada. They have been married 27 years. Ada had 6 children, 3 are still alive. All persons were born in NY, as well as their parents, except Harold, who was born in CT, and Leland who was born in NJ.
1915 Census - Living in Sayville, on Candee Ave (54), with wife Ada A. (49), and children: Vernon (32), Harry (25), sister-in-law Emma A. (48). Nelson and son Vernon are 'Ship Captains'. Harry is a 'Moving P****** Agent'. Living next door to Wiliam Y. Benjamin.
1920 Census - Living in Sayville, Suffolk Co., NY with wife Ada M. (54). Living on Candee Avenue. Nelson's age is listed as '48'. This would make his DOB as 1872. I believe this is a mistake, and he is really 58.
1925 Census - Living in Sayville on Irwin St. (64), with wife Ada M. (59), and sister-in-law Emily A. Sweezey (57). He is a Boat Builder. The 1915 census also listed Emily/Emma as a sister-in-law. I show that Emily A. is his sister. I wonder if I have something wrong?
1930 Census - Living in Sayville, (67). He is living on Willow Street. No occupation. Living by himself. Listed as "Nelson H. Swezey".
I found the following listing in the Union Cemetery official log book:
"17 Oct 1930 - Certificate of death of Nelson H. Sweezy age 73 years - color white at Sayville. L.I. Cause of death suicide by illuminating gas. Burial in Union Cemetery Sayville, 19 Oct 1930. Undertaker - W. N. Raynor & Son."
I found a Nelson Sweezey in the 1890 directory for Bridgeport, Connecticut. It says he is a Ship Carpenter. For 'location' it says "Water, Black Rock". It could be that Nelson is living on the water in a house boat. His son Harold Nelson Sweezey was born in Bridgeport, so I am sure this is him. Actually, son Harold's draft registration card says he was born in "Black Rock, Conn.".
I did some research on Black Rock, and it appears to be a Harbor in Bridgeport, Fairfield Co., Conn.
Nelson is also listed in the 1891 directory - same info.
From the 1 Oct 1897 edition of the "Suffolk County News":
"Nelson Sweezy moved on Wednesday from Railroad avenue to the place on Candee Avenue which he recently bought from Wilbur Morrell. John Bientall and family are occupying the house vacated by Mr. Sweezy."
